Don't Tangle with Lily
Lilly
Skye was having a bad day. She had driven in to town to visit her
bank manager because she wanted a small loan to extend her herb
garden. He had laughed in her face. The manager did not believe in
giving women loans. Not for such an idea which would not make the
bank much interest. He could see the adventure was bound to fail
because she was a woman. Didn't have the stamina of a man to make
the company grow. Or a man to help her with the project.
“You
are a security risk,” the manager said. “There’s no way I am
giving you money for such a crackpot idea.”
Her
temper raised beyond boiling point. Lilly stood up quickly sending
the chair flying and headed for the door. She stopped at the door to
stare daggers at the manager. “Your bitch will have kittens.”
snarled Lilly, then slammed shut the door.
During
the afternoon the manager received a hysterical phone call from his
wife. “I can’t believe it. My poor Betsy. She’s delivered a
litter of kittens. How could that happen?”
“Don’t
be silly, Dear. How many drinks have you had to celebrate. Dogs don’t
have kittens.
“Here.”
she sniffled, handing the phone to the vet. “Tell him. He won’t
believe me.”
“Daniel.
You’re dog did have kittens. I delivered them,” the vet told him.
“Never seen anything like it before in all my years of practice.”
“I
don’t believe either of you.” Daniel snapped. “You trying to
play a joke on me?”
“No.
God’s honest truth” You can come over to see for yourself,”
said the vet.
“I’ll
be right over.” snapped Daniel, slammed down the phone, grabbed his
coat and was heading out of the office.
“Daniel,
where are you going?” asked his secretary. “You next appointment
is due.”
“Cancel
it.” Daniel barked as he strode past. “An emergency has come up.”
“What
will I tell them.” She shouted to his retreating back. This was not
like her boss to leave a client in the lurch.
“Use
your imagination,” he yelled, as he pushed the button of the lift.
Daniel
strode down the street to where he had his car parked. Or should have
been parked. All he could see was a brick wall with flower pots
sitting on the top with an array of chartreuse colored flowers in
them. He looked over the wall to find his car was locked behind the
brick wall and there was no way to get it out without breaking down
the wall, them he would have to break the cement blocks which had
chains padlocked to each wheel.
He
hailed a cab to get to the vet and had to push his way through the
crowd of reporters, and curious on lookers, to make his way inside.
“You
made it, Dear,” his wife sniffed.
“How
did the vultures get to hear about the kittens. Did you inform the
press?”
“No
body here did,” replied the vet. “They just turned up. Thought
you may have.”
“Don’t
be stupid. Why would I want them to know. Well. Where are the miracle
kittens.”
They
all entered the room where the dog and kittens were. The kittens were
snuggled up with the dog in the basket. Betsy looked up as they
entered then hung her head as though she was ashamed for delivering
kittens instead of pups. Daniel collapsed to the floor in shock.
Betsy licked the kittens with love. They were all hers. She didn't care if everyone else didn't love her babies. She did.
